Punch in double award success

Burton based pub company Punch were celebrating double success after picking up awards for Operations team of the year and Responsible Retailer of the year at the Publican Morning Advertiser awards.

The industry’s leading awards event, held at London’s Grosvenor House hotel on Monday evening and attended by over fifteen hundred people from across the industry, saw pub operators compete to be recognised as the best in the business in fifteen separate categories.


Beating off stiff competition from Beds and Bars and Charles Wells, the Punch New Business Development Team scooped the award of Best Operations Team of 2015 after a judging process of interviews with the team, licensees and visits to Punch pubs.

Set up in 2013, the New Business Development Team, made up twenty New Business development managers, two Regional Operations Directors and headed up by Operations Director Paul Pavli, have been providing intensive support to Punch Publicans from the point of entry and through the first critical year of business.

Paul said: “The New Business Team has proved that if you support Publicans in those critical early months, it makes a significant difference. We oversee the reinvestment works, assist with the launch, help publicans get their catering offer, marketing and merchandising right – and crucially make sure they get off to a strong start with their financial controls. “Winning Operations Team of the year is a fantastic recognition for the team and the enormous hard work they have put in. Providing this kind of support has been a real innovation in the industry and shows our commitment to our licensee’s success.”

Punch’s second award of the evening came with their announcement as Responsible Retailer of the year. Having been nominated for the award by Drinkaware, the charitable organisation which aims to get people to think differently about alcohol, Punch again underwent two sets of panel interviews, setting out their actions, information and the training they provide around the responsible sale of alcohol.

Supporting their Publicans on spotting and dealing with underage sales, providing information and guidance on alcohol use and raising the awareness of Drinkaware with both licensees and their customers gave Punch the edge in a hard fought category.

Andy Slee, Punch's External Affairs director said: “There are so many pressures on pubs now in terms of legislation that it is important that pubs are legal and selling alcohol in a responsible way.” “There is nothing better than the great atmosphere in a pub, so we seek to support our licensees every step of the way to make sure that everyone enjoys alcohol in a sociable way.”

Punch announced as National Business Awards Winner 


One of the UK’s leading pub companies, Punch, has won the Business Enabler of the Year Award at this year’s National Business Awards. Punch won the Business Enabler of the Year Award for its Punch Foundation Tenancy (PFT) lease agreement, a fully supported way for entrepreneurs to enter the trade as well as existing publicans to gain the skills and business acumen they need to become highly successful business owners.

Going up against nine businesses across different industries, Punch were nominated as national finalists from the hundreds of businesses that entered. Punch were announced as the winners at the National Business Awards on 12 November at Grosvenor House in London, where they were presented with their award by Dermot Murnaghan . Judge Charles Ward, Former COO of Intellect UK, praised the Burton-based pub company for its PFT model, commenting: “The traditional pub trade is suffering from a similar malaise to high street retail. Failure rates are alarming so the Punch Foundation Tenancy model is a true innovation in supporting pub entrepreneurs to buck the trend through up-skilling managers and encouraging differentiation.”
